What the signal means
The Claude meetup community is retiring its WhatsApp chat in favour of a Telegram channel. Within days of the move, members noticed a wave of spam on the new channel. The community's response was practical: members suggested popular anti-spam bots, the option of building a moderation bot with Claude, and a stricter built-in anti-spam setting that unlocks once a group passes a certain size. Organisers applied the setting the same day.
Practical implications
- Moving platforms brings moderation work along with it. Spam arrives quickly on open channels. - Built-in platform controls are often enough before a custom bot is needed.
Content and community opportunities
- A short note for organisers on moving a community without losing members: announce early, pin the new link, and set moderation before the move.
Risks and open questions
- Splitting a community across platforms can thin out discussion for a while. This week's WhatsApp activity in the group was low.
Watch next
- Whether activity recovers on the new channel.
